Jan Scheurwater of the Van Valengroup:

Too large supply of celeriac at home and abroad

The celeriac price has been low since the beginning of the season. "The market is just very average and you could even call it bad", says Jan Scheurwater of Van Valengroup. The Barendrechtse Knollen Centrale (BKC), which has been focussing on marketing and packaging celeriac since 1987 belongs to this group.

According to the trader the cause of the bad price forming - the growers price is on a very low level - is the large supply of celeriac at home and abroad. "There's not much demand for celeriac from abroad, so they probably have enough themselves", concludes Jan. "All in all it's a very different scene from last year, when we had a reasonable year, but the close of the season didn't go too wall due to the early supply of new celeriac."
