Tunisia: Exceptionally high citrus production

The citrus season in Tunisia is expected to be better than originally thought. It was expected the the production in 2011-2012 would be the same as in 2010-2011 (258,000 tonnes), but it has turned out to be even better: 260,000 tonnes. This increase is thanks to the growing production of the Maltese oranges, Tunisia's main agricultural export product, which has a production of over 120,000 tonnes this season, against 118,0000 tonnes last season.

The citrus season lasts from November to June. On the 20th of January a large part of the citrus had already been picked: clementines (98%), navel (80%), lemon (60%), sweet orange (75%), Maltese oranges (30%), mandarin (50%) and half of the rest of the citrus.

The export started on the 15th on January. Now 3,000 tonnes has already been exported. 25,000 tonnes of citrus is expected to be exported in the entire season. Tunisia has 18,000 ha which is meant for citrus cultivation, of which 80% is used.
