Growing figures from Lower Saxony for 2011

Growers from the German state of Lower Saxony have been growing iceberg lettuce, onions and carrots alongside asparagus.

The German Farmer's press service said that these four vegetables were the most grown in the state last year.

Asparagus cultivation used an area of 4,073ha. Iceberg lettuce was grown over 3,012ha. In third place came onions, using 1,966ha. Fourth place went to carrots with 1,741ha.

Lower down the scale came cauliflower and broccoli which used 849 and 844ha respectively.

Even further down were kohlrabi and kale which used 500 and 497ha respectively.

The area utilised for green bean production was 716ha.
