Italy: Pear, the worst market in the last 10 years

Concerning the current pear marketing season, FreshPlaza spoke to Massimo Mantovani of Azienda Agricola Penna, operating in the area of Ferrara (Italy).

"The marketing trend of pears, in particular Abate Fetel variety, is worse this year, maybe the worst in the last 10 years. With a strong contraction in consumption abroad and a significant reduction in domestic one, an abundant supply of product is noted due to an overproduction compared to the last campaign" Mantovani says.

"A considerable fall of production prices is therefore recorded, between EUR 0.30 and 0.50. The climate allows a huge setting and the summer drought determined pears with a smaller size compared to the average."

"As for Abate Fetel pear, the competition in northern Europe markets is with Dutch branded-Conference. In 45 days we will compete with William and Abate pears from Latin America" Mantovani concludes.
