Nicolas Vandenbogaerde, Dendauw-Stragier:

Belgium: Combination low carrot prices and less stock not logical

Many traders expect a recovery of the carrot market in January, but there is not much to be seen of this. "Last year about this time there was a large demand from Russia, but this year this demand is very disappointing and prices are also not very good" Nicolas Vandenbogaerde of carrot exporter Dendauw-Stragier (DS) sighs. "It is very quiet in the trade."

Russia is an important country of export for DS. According to Nicolas competitor Poland is the biggest problem on the market. "The vegetable production in Poland increases every year and they also export more and more. Large investments were made there with European money over the last few years."

As far as export is concerned Dendauw is not hindered by other countries. "Less is being imported from other countries," the trader observes. "In Denmark and the Scandinavian countries more carrots were exported in previous years. Now it is very limited, because their own production is more than sufficient." Nicolas does not expect these countries to become competitors in the future. "I do not see them exporting themselves. They are not that much inclined." DS continues to address the Russian market. "We find it important to offer surplus value in the area of peeling and with this we can continue to serve our loyal customers."

Strange: low stocks, low prices
The exporter explains, that it is strange that prices are at a low level. "Stocks are much smaller this year than last season and normally speaking this should have a positive influence on the prices, but that is not the case." He mentions that the quality of some shipments is not the best. This could have an influence on the negative prices. "It is an open question whether prices will change. "It is difficult to predict. In November we thought prices would increase because of the smaller stock and the same demand. But in the market this is not noticeable. A logical situation with normal demand and smaller stock is an increase in price. So whatever will come now will be a surprise. In any case there are a lot of factors, which like the weather may play a role. When it gets colder the consumption of winter vegetables normally increases. It is waiting for more demand."

Dendauw-Stragier grow, process and supply fresh carrots all year round. The company offers various packing possibilities, such as dishes, bags, cases and big bags. Also special packings can be offered at the request of the client. Customers are wholesalers and supermarkets.
