Spain: Tany Nature chooses Unitec for stonefruit processing

Tany Nature S.A. is a Spanish company, founded in 2002, in order to meet the processing and packaging needs of fruit produced in the new plantations developed by the group of companies Atanasio Naranjo-Castelnovo Nature, S.L, in the south-west of the Iberian Peninsula. These new plants are mainly located in Extremadura (birthplace of the founder), Andalucia and Alentejo Portugués and are oriented to a more global market and not only in Europe, as before.

Tany Nature is specialized in stone fruit, with nectarines and plums as major products. The company has identified the best production areas in Spain, Portugal and Morocco, trying to diversify the location of the plantations, with the aim to obtain the best fruit in an ideal microclimate. Tany Nature is a worldwide leader in plums, even if its specialities are nectarines, peaches and apricots.

As Atanasio Naranjo, Tany Nature managing director, explains: "Our production schedule begins from the end of April in Andalusia until the end of November in Extremadura. We are practically on the market for the whole period of the Northern Hemisphere season. From next season, in addition, we integrate the calendar with the fruit coming from our newly established plantations in Morocco."

The company operates on four continents (America, Africa, Asia and Europe), although the main market is Europe, followed by Latin America. "We are excited about the development of our exports to emerging countries in Africa and South-East Asia."

The company has already harvested all its production of stone fruit in Spain, Portugal and Morocco, three countries where it is actively present.

Atanasio Naranjo adds: "As for diversification of production introduced in the last year, we will start the harvest of asparagus in January 2012, in our fields in Morocco."

Over the years, Tany Nature has invested in certification of its products and its processes in order to guarantee excellence and quality of its fruit to international customers. Tany Nature was the first company in Spain to get the BRC certification, in addition to the Tesco Nature's Choice, EurepGAP, GlobalGAP, Field to Fork, among the others.

Since the beginning of Tany Nature activities, Unitec machinery was the ideal technological solution for the company. "We know that it is not easy to find technologies suitable for us, because of the need for extreme sensitivity in the treatment of the product. Unitec has enabled us to work with reliable equipment, capable of incorporating continuous innovation," Atanasio Naranjo says.

"From the first to the last sizers, all our machines were provided by Unitec: we have a UNICAL_600 sizer line for larger fruit such as peaches and nectarines. UNICAL_300 sizer line is destined instead for plums and apricots. Finally, we installed a UNICAL_200 sizer line, special for apricots. I do not know a better machine than this in the world for its delicacy and flexibility. Unitec help us also in the auxiliary machinery and I+D+I processing lines, equipped with computer vision and robotics" Atanasio Naranjo (photo) underlines.

Cost reduction, reliability, technological innovation and value of Unitec machinery are the main advantages for Tany Nature and are the main factors for the choice of Unitec technological solutions, also in the future.

"Working with retailers in four continents requires us to have a safe and cutting-edge technology, that does not leave us in the lurch during processing," Atanasio Naranjo concludes, with reference to the effectiveness of the different groups of Unitec machines that are routinely used by Tany Nature.
