Peruvian mango prices are expected to rise 70%

Fruit and vegetable prices for mangoes, grapes, avocados and asparagus, among others, have increased by up to 80%, said William Arteaga Donayre, coordinator for the Agribusiness Department of Promperú.

According to the executive in recent weeks mango prices will have the highest increase, due to a supply problem. This situation is based on product crop rotation (lower production due to physiological plant issues), reaching levels of USD $0.80 per kilo (in farm) and it is expected to continue to increase 70%.

He also mentioned that grape prices are stable, relative to recent years. Yet, processed asparagus have not kept growing in volumes nor values like other products have, in total exports.

Similarly, he said that high prices do not respond to an issue of a North American economic crisis boom, "but now our products have good prices, due to the counter season."

He further argued that in the coming months an improvement in the prices of products like fresh avocado, pomegranate (frozen) is expected, due to an issue of permits and promotion.

Finally, William Arteaga said that Peru is in a very advanced stage in the process of entering fresh peppers to the United States, which would occur in less time than avocados and mangos, thanks to Propepers Adex´s work, "there is very good progress and we are in a good place to wait."
