Good prospects for organic fruit and vegetables in Germany

Sales of organic fruit and vegetables in Germany increase, but the share in the total distribution is still negligible. There is, however, a strong trend noticeable for more local product. This is a positive for the organic products from the region. The consumer finds the origin of the product more and more important. Regional growers and shops should develop a regional shop chain.

In 2011 sales of organic products increased by about ten percent. This is striking, in a stagnating foodstuff market. Although price differences between conventional and organic are becoming bigger the DBV nevertheless expect organic to grow in 2012. In addition to this the market is recovering from the results of the EHEC-crisis.

German households in 2011 bought about 1 percent more fresh vegetables. but in total spent 3% less. It is hoped that in 2012 consumers' confidence will increase further.

Supermarkets have been able to extend their sales share. The discounters seem to have reached their top at the moment.

The fruit harvest in Germany in 2011 amounted to 1.23 million tons according to BVE, less than average. This is mainly the result of the fact that apple growers, mainly in the north and north-east suffered serious damage. The weak strawberry harvest was compensated for by the cherry and plum harvest in the summer.
