Smaller cauliflower supply in France

Agreste, the bureau of statistics of the French Ministry of Agriculture and Fishery
have announced that the cauliflower market is not in balance. The mild weather conditions of last November have hastened the growth of cauliflower, but the demand lagged behind.

The supply was much larger than the demand. Large quantities were processed. In November 26% more cauliflower was harvested than in the same month for 2010 and in December 36% more. For the rest of the months of the season from January to April only a slightly lower harvested quantity than in 2011 is expected from the French growing areas. The peak of the harvest will, as usual, be reached in March.

Because of the quantities supplied growers prices were extremely low in December. Growers prices in December 2011 were 56% lower than in December 2010 and 31% lower than the average over a five year period. The market situation has, however, changed slightly towards January and this is also noticeable on the German market. In the second week of 2012 prices stabilized. Italian products could also profit from this on the German market.
