Ecuadorian banana exports grew in 2011

The Provincial Direction of Agro-Livestock in El Oro (MAGAP) showed a significant rise in banana exports, showing, according to them, respect for contracts between producers and exporters.

Between the 28th of December of 2011 and the 23rd of January of 2012, MAGAP delivered 330 certifications to the banana producers to be used in the signing of contracts. Moreover, 80 requests were answered. Requests like: changing the name of companies, division of companies, update on owners, among other things.

Chamaidán explained that if exporters don't present contracts with producers they will be sanctioned according to the Banana Law. Likewise, disrespect for the official price for a box of bananas, which for 2012 is $5,50 will be sanctioned.

In the first week of January, from the facilities at Bolívar Port, 1,369,192 boxes of bananas were exported; this is 47% less than the first week of 2011.

"Fruit reduction is due to a drop from week 40 to week 46 of last year. This caused a reduced harvest for the first week of January", commented Jorge Chamaidán, provincial director for MAGAP.

According to statistics from MAGAP, banana exports in 2011 added up to 270 million representing a 1.7% growth compared with 2010.

"Of the fruit exported last year, 28.85% was shipped from the Bolívar Port. 77.9 million boxes left from there", expressed Chamaidán.

Russia, United States, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Chile, among other markets are the destinations for the product from El Oro. Likewise, the most exporting companies were Ubesa, Banaconti, Reybanpac, Chiquita and Oro Banano.
