Bas Hesselink, Fyffes:

"EU: "Banana market pulling up again"

The market for bananas is starting to pull up again. "It was about time after a difficult period for the bananas trade", according to Bas Hesselink of Fyffes. After the sales prices dropping in May, the market was difficult for the rest of the year, he says. "Normally the market improves after the summer, but due to overproduction, EHEC- and economic crisis the sales were mediocre."

Now that, as usual in these weeks and the coming months, less bananas will be produced and smaller amounts will be transported to Europe the demand and price will rise. "Which is normal in the first four months of the year", according to Bas. "We expect the prices to rise in the next few weeks and the market to remain good until at least the end of April." What the banana market will be like in the summer and autumn, can't be predicted at the moment, he says.
