Netherlands: Kloosterboer receives Lean and Green Award

The Kloosterboer Group is to become the first cold store to receive the Lean and Green Award. The Connekt Sustainable Logistics programme, developed through a collaboration between Connekt and the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment, hands out this award to companies who are actively dedicated to making their logistic process more sustainable. The presentation of the award will take place in April this year.

‘Lean and Green’ is an incentive programme. It encourages companies to grow towards a higher sustainability level and to take those measures which not only produce cost savings, but simultaneously reduce damage to the environment.

As a logistic service provider, The Kloosterboer Group is the market leader in temperature controlled storage and distribution of food-related products. Holding this position, Kloosterboer categorically recognises their responsibility to lead the way in developing initiatives in the field of sustainability and green enterprises. Previously, the company had already realised a significant reduction in the use of energy by means of innovative logistic solutions. Examples of these solutions are the full automatic highbay cold stores at Rotterdam’s Maasvlakte and in Harnes, France. These cold stores use 40% less energy than conventional cold stores with the same storage capacity. Within the framework of the Lean and Green Award, Kloosterboer has made a commitment to reduce the CO2-emissions by 20% within 5 years. This reduction will be achieved by a more efficient consolidation of transport, use of energy saving methods and means of transport, reducing the energy use of existing cool- and cold stores, developing green locations and placing windmills at their facility in Vlissingen.
