Spain: High prices for products in Almeria

The month of January has brought increases in prices for almost all fruit and vegetable supply from Almeria. Last week increase in prices were registered, this week some products stayed the same and others, like peppers, have again increased.

Without doubt, origin markets recorded the highest values of this year´s agricultural campaign. The cold, supply reduction and the high demand for produce in Almeria, are benefiting the marketing of vegetables.

Squash increased during the first cuts, having a price of €1.60, but ending sales around €1.30 per kilo. Long cucumber was at €0.70 and during final cuts at €0.60. Short cucumber ranged from €1.20 to €0.80, and sales for French cucumber went from €0.70 to €0.50 per kilo. Long eggplant sold at first for €1.20 and in auctions at €0.90. Striped eggplant reached €1.40 and ended sales at €1 a kilo. The second category eggplant sold below €0.90 to €0.40.

Green beans still stand out with the highest values of this campaign. Strike beans are around €5.10 and €3 per kilo, emerite beans have an average price of €2.60, helda beans are around €3.30, long helda beans sell for €3.20 to €2 the kilo. The green Italian pepper ranges between €0.80 and €0.60 and Italian red pepper has a first cut at €0.70 and at auction €0.30 per kilo. The second-class Italian pepper is sold below €0.60 a kilo. California green peppers are sold between €0.85 to €0.70, California red has a rough cut of €1.20 and auctions for €1 per kilo and California Yellow pepper reaches a rough cut of €1.50 and auctions for €1.10 a kilo. Clovi type peppers continue to register good prices, the red type with a first cut of €1.30 and auctions for €0.90, the green type is sold between €0.85 and €0.60 a kilo. In green types of peppers Clovi and California, are sold below €0.60 the kilo up to €0.20 a kilo; the red registered prices below €0.70.

Regarding tomatoes, the prices remain high and are registering slight variations compared to last week. The tomato on the vine reaches first cuts in auctions at €1.10 and auctions a €1 per kilo. Canarian red tomato is between €0.80 ans €0.60 and marmande tomatoes are sold at €0.70 per kilo. For the coming weeks, sales managers are confident that these values will remain steady as the supply trend tends to decrease due to cultivation shifting to melon and watermelon plantations for next spring. Due to these quotes many plantations will endure as long as possible in the greenhouses of Almeria, to be able to restore profitability that has not been achieved in previous months due to low prices. In these circumstances it is possible that extra early spring transplants are lower than last season and farmers bet on melon and watermelon transplant to be carried out during the last weeks of February, according to Agronoticias.
