Truck drivers' strike, troubles throughout Italy

The protest of truck driver's that devastated Sicily last week extends throughout Italy. "The roadblocks are only for the heavy vehicles, but the saturation of the junctions creates queues and inconvenience for cars," the National Coordination Centre of the road viability says.

At the moment, the situation is more critical in Piedmont, Lombardia, Abruzzo and Campania. In Calabria, Puglia, Marche, Sicily and Liguria, other protesters are present near the entrances to the motorway network, but outside of the road: this may cause inconvenience to the regularity of the circulation.

"The truck drivers' strike, is not a strike but an illegal protest that is blatantly violating citizens' rights, which are upheld by the constitution", Codacons states. This is the reason why this body is asking the Prime Minister, the Minister of Internal affairs to make use of art.8 of law n. 146 of 1996 and immediately adopt emergency measures.

"Roadblocks should be immediately removed and demonstrations should be cancelled. At this stage, abstention from work is illegal, given that the notice provided for by the law has expired and the strike has been going on for more than 3 days, which is the maximum length of a strike set forth by the law."
