Smaller availability pushes mango prices up

The prices for mango's are relatively high at the moment. The Peruvian mango season just started. Importers on Tacler report prices of over 7 Euro for Kent mangos. The availability of the Peruvian production has decreased significantly this season. André Boon of AJB's Fruitbox says that this season will be completely different than the past years. "First of all the export started 3 to 4 weeks later and the volumes compared to last year will be 50% max."

In contrast to the 6500 containers that were shipped from Peru last year, only 3000 containers are expected to be exported this season. The demand from the United States is also larger this year, partially due to the lesser quality of the mangos from Ecuador due to heavy rainfall.

Marco Torres Barbosa of Tropical Fresh BV says that mangos are being sold for high prices. He hopes to receive the first shipment of mangos from Peru soon. The importer also has Tommy Atkins from Brazil. "Normally the European importers switch to the Peruvian production", he says. "But there is a lot less coming from Peru this season and they mainly do Kent."
