China: Domestic demand for apples increases for New Year

In China, the apple’s Chinese name symbolizes peace. Every New Year, it is the custom in China to purchase fresh apples as gifts. Some people share apples with each other and eat them on the New Year’s Day. Some others use apples as an offering to the Gods in order to be safe and prosperous in coming year.

In the apple season of 2011-2012, the production of fresh apples is almost the same as last year, but the quality is better than that of last year. The sales fell this year due to the high price. However, the Chinese still prefer to buy fresh apples for New Year. This practice has led to some reduction of apples stocks. Chinese apples won’t be as cheap as before due the huge domestic demand and inflation. Of course, most important is that the quality of Chinese apples has been getting better and better with the increasing price.
