German consumers bought less pineapples

The quantity of pineapples bought by German consumers reached the highest level in eight years in 2008. In 2011 the quantity sold probably decreased again to the level of 2004.
 
According to research of the German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI)
households bought up to and including November 2011 about 85,000 tons of pineapples. This is 2.2 kgs. per household. Compared to last year the quantity bought decreased, however, by about 12%. The average price for 1 kg. of pineapples increased to 1.20 Euro up to November 2011. In total the quantity of pineapples sold per household was 2.6 kgs. in 2010.
 

Costa Rica, South Africa and Panama are according to provisional figures of the German Central Bureau of Statistics the most important suppliers of pineapple. With a share of 72% of the total quantity imported Costa Rica is the biggest supplier. Up to now Germany has imported 117,115 tons of pineapple from there. The pineapple orchards in Costa Rica increased from 28,000 HA in 2007 to 45,000 HA in 2010. The pineapple production amounted to almost 2 million tons in 2010. In addition to Europe the United States were part of the most important export destinations for pineapple from Costa Rica.
