Brazil: Rain and hail and affects apple production in Santa Catarina

Apple production in the mountain region of Santa Catarina suffered with the strong rain and hail, last week. Rain affected four municipalities that are important for the fruit in the state and 40% of plantations were damaged.

Farmer's worries are about what's to come. Fruit is damaged and compromising the coming harvesting. "The bud, that produces the fruit at the top of the branch, is compromised as it didn't get the full sap in order to form the bud for next year", explained Rauliclei Medeiros, agriculture technician.

Apple damaged by hail can be sold to the juice industry, but only for 1/4 of the price obtained with good quality apple.
