half the apple harvest

Germany: 2011 bad fruit year Mecklenburg VorPomern

The Bureau of Statistics of the state Mecklenburg VorPommern recently revealed that in 2011, a total of 22,800 tonnes of fruit was picked. Apples have always been the most important part of the fruit harvest here, but the apple harvest decreased in 2011 by around 60% to 15,400 tonnes. The causes of this were the late frost in the beginning of May in the main growing areas.

The blackberries, grown for processing, decreased by around 55% to 868 tonnes. The amount of strawberries was around the same as in 2010 with nearly 5,700 tonnes. Cherries and plums were harvested in larger numbers than in 2010. But the minimal importance of these fruits for the total harvest of the state couldn't compensate for the loss in apples.

Almost four fifths of the apples are processed for fruit juice, sauce and baby food. One fifth is sold as table fruit. The grower's prices for eating apples were lower in 2011 than in 2010, but despite this they were still above the multiple year average.
