Ukraine: Fruit, vegetable and potato storage costs to increase significantly

Warm winter of the season 2011/12 is a serious problem for both Ukrainian fruit, vegetable and potato producers and wholesale companies owning storage facilities.
“At the present time, the market participants owning modern storage facilities complain of increased costs of energy for cooling and ventilation of produce during storage”, Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform, says. “Producers report of these costs to have grown by 30-40% year-on-year and plan to take them into account during pricing of produce in spring”, the expert continues.

At the same time, Mrs. Getman states that the storage costs have no impact on prices for vegetables and potatoes, which became significantly less expensive after storage. In addition, as Fruit-Inform predicted, potato and vegetable prices did not grow in the Pre-New-Year period. Currently, the demand in the Ukrainian market for vegetables and potatoes reached its minimum level in this season. However it may slightly grow in a week that, nevertheless, will have no considerable impact on prices. Exports are not active for the present, as the oversupply of vegetables and potatoes is experienced in some other countries too.
