Mexico: Chihuahua sees record in apple production

Chihuahua takes first place in apple production, with 354,000 tons per year, a number 8 times higher than the production of states like Durango, Coahuila and Puebla, who together total 101,000 tons.

With these numbers, the state earns the first position in apple production and became, with that, the main producer on a national level and the main exporter, leaving behind states like Durango, Coahuila and Puebla that have fought for second place for many years.

The Secretary of Agriculture, Live-Stock, Rural Development, Fishing and Food (SAGARPA) informed that the states in the north concentrate 60% of the production and Puebla alone collects a bit more than 25,000 tons, adding up to the production of the other states, reaching in total 70,000 tons.

This year, Durango has the second place, where 41,602 tons of fruit were harvested, followed by Coahuila with 34,800 tons and the fourth place belongs to Puebla for the aforementioned 25,000 tons. These numbers are similar to the ones from 2010, despite 2011 weather conditions.

Chihuahua has been at this level for many years thanks to technologies like irrigation, diseases control, anti-hail nets, frost control, among other techniques used by 50 to 60% of the producers that produce 350,000 tons per year, according to statistics.
