Costa Rica: Low temperatures cause pineapples to fruit early

The regional director for MAG, Erick QuirĂ³s adverted that agricultural products like banana and especially the pine will be affected more by the excess of cold than by the excess of water. The regional headquarters for MAG in Caribe describes that some rivers broke their banks but returned to normal, saving harvests form a certain flooding.

Low temperatures reported at the begin of the previous weekend, left a deeper and more harmful mark, specially on pineapples, since it caused the early blossoming of fruits.

The phenomena is called pineapples natural appearance and the consequence will be reflected on sales, since by being earlier, the fruit will be smaller and cheaper. Many will lose as the impact on the producers pockets is not encouraging.

The Chamber of Pineapple Producers of Costa Rica affirmed that it's still early to know how many acres are affected, but by mid February it will be possible to know exactly.
