For the second consecutive year a considerable increase in strawberry exports is expected in Mexico, that is why Michoacán will benefit by being the leading producers and marketers of Mexico.
According to the Information Service of Agrifood and Fisheries (SIAP), it is estimated that in the autumn-winter 2011 period, 3,214 hectares were planted in the state and 112,362 tons were extracted, representing a yield of 34,960 tons per hectare.
For the 2012 autumn-winter period (ranging from November 2011 to March 2012) 3,873 acres were planted in Michoacan, ie 20.5 percent more surface area, while in Baja California 466 thousand hectares were planted, 26 in the south Baja California and six in the state of Mexico.
In this regard, the manager of the Strawberry Product System, Carlos Kuster Parrodi, reported that it is a good year and the number of buyers has increased because until last year there were four important brokers (intermediaries) and now there are about 12 between medium to large.
"We are doing well in the current period, mainly producers with macrotunel or protected agricultural because the cold has been strong and frost has come sooner than expected; in the last period there was no record of hectares stricken. We hope that this situation does not occur, but we have to wait and see how the climate behaves between January and February, which are the months that tend to have frost," he said.
