Wal-Mart on top

Global retail dominated by 10 companies

The global retail industry is currently dominated by 10-12 transnational corporations. In 2007, the top 10 retail TNCs shared 40% in worldwide retail sales. In 2010, the top 12 retail transnational corporations collectively had an annual turnover of US$1.32 trillion. With an annual turnover of about US$419 billion, the US Corporation Wal-Mart ranked first in the world. As shown the other major TNCs are much smaller than Wal-Mart. The only UK retail in this list is Tesco in seventh position. The asset values of these top 12 was over US$564 billion in 2010 and Wal-Mart alone represents 32% (US$180.3 billion) of this. The asset values of the next three TNCs – Carrefour, Tesco and CVS Caremark – were around one-third of Wal-Mart. This reiterates the economic prowess of Wal-Mart at the global level.
