Chicory prices in Germany weaken

At German wholesalers the chicory prices have begun to weaken since the beginning of the year. According to the German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft the lower buying prices in production markets Belgium and Holland are a vital part of this. The demand is also low at this time of year.

The wholesaler price of Dutch and German chicory was around 6.80 Euro for 5 kilos halfway through the first week. The average wholesale price of Belgian chicory has already decreased to 5.90 Euro per 5 kg. In the German supermarkets chicory is on offer more often this week than in the last three weeks of last year. At five chains chicory is being advertised this week, for which the price is between 1.98 and 3.18 Euro per kilo.

The chicory market in France was quiet in the last week of last year. The peak of the French chicory production is expected in February. Estimates from the French ministry of Agriculture predict that the total harvest this year will be 7% smaller than last year. This despite the fact the cultivation area has remained the same size. The lower harvest yield has trouble with phytosanitary problems and the size of roots.
