Hallmark 'gene free' in Baden-Württemberg

Alexander Bonde, the minister of Agriculture in the German state Baden-Württemberg, wants to introduce a quality hallmark for agrarian products that are free from gene technology. "Whomever buys a product with the hallmark, will be guaranteed that the product is free of genetic engineering", according to Bonde. In the whole of Germany there is already a uniform 'no genetic engineering' hallmark.

Bonde also wants to plead the cause for letting the separate states have the opportunity to lawfully protect genetic engineering agriculture. Until now there has been no legal hold. This has to change. "The citizens don't want genetic engineering on their plates", according to Bonde.

Another goal that the minister wants to realise, is that growers who want to switch to organic cultivation will be supported more. "We want to encourage everyone who sees market opportunities in organic agriculture to take this chance", he says.
