More durians for China

Consumers in China who have taken to the 'king of fruits' are muscling in on harvests from Malaysia, the supplier of 90 per cent of durians consumed by Singaporeans. For suppliers, China is a drool-inducing market, given its one billion-plus people. Importers here say more shipments are going to China, and prices here have gone up in the past year.

One major importer, Geylang's Fruits Top 1 Department Store, now sells mao shan wang ('mountain cat'), the premier variety, at $12 per kg here. Previously, the price was around $10. Mr Teoh Ah Yi, the company's director, said he was told Chinese consumers pay up to 80 yuan ($16) per kg for mao shan wang durian. 'We can still get good durians here but in the past two years, Malaysian suppliers are giving us less,' said Mr Teoh. 'They say they have to supply to China.'
