If weather conditions permit, watermelon marketing will begin in early February, said Guadalupe Sosa Oxté, owner of the ranch "El Ayudante", located near Kantunilkin, Mexico.
The producer said that he used his own resources, an amount of 25 000 pesos. He only planted an acre of watermelon, but acknowledged that if conditions permit it, he expects to market an average of 35 tons.
He recalled that the work started last November 20th will show results in February, for the moment the cold is affecting plants.
He explained that on one hectare 3,500 plants can be planted and each one of them must produce two fruits of around 10 to 12 kilos, so in this case will he willonly need half a hectare to produce 35 tons.
"Agriculture is a random game, because if weather conditions allow the producer, he will do well and can mitigate the crisis in the country," said Sosa Oxté.
He said that to consolidate yourself as a producer the support of the family is required, as there is no schedule nor days off for plants, because spraying and irrigation is required.
