10% larger asparagus harvest Lower Saxony
Germany: preparation new asparagus season started
In December a start has been made with milling of asparagus foliage and forming of the dams, which are so typical for the asparagus cultivation, as per the German Landvolk-Pressedienst. Last year, according to the Bureau of Statistics, about 26,500 tons of asparagus were harvested in Lower Saxony, which is asparagus federal state No: 1 in Germany. This is ten percent more than in 2010. The area of cultivation had decreased somewhat: from 4,176 HA in 2010 to 4,073 HA in 2011.
The average yield per HA increased from about 5,7 tons to about 6,5 tons. Looking at Germany in general the harvest remained just about constant at 4,9 tons/HA. But prices were low despite the good harvest in 2011. Favourable weather conditions in spring made the supply increase greatly and prices dropped. The growers had to accept a decrease in price of about 40% for white asparagus, which in quantity is the most important variety.
A good opportunity for specialists to prepare for the coming asparagus season is the international specialized fair Interaspa, which will be held in Hannover on 11 and 12 January - 250 exhibitors will inform visitors about cultivation, storage and sale of asparagus, but also about other vegetables and berry fruit varieties. More information about the fair is available on www.interaspa.de.
