AU: Strong demand boosts Tassie cherry profits

After a tough season, the Tasmanian cherry industry is optimistic about this season's produce. Lucy Gregg from Fruit Growers Tasmania says around 30% of this year's crop in Tasmania will be exported overseas and there has been a strong demand from the rest of Australia.

She says despite the loss of the third biggest export market to Thailand, which has banned all Australian stonefruit, the industry in Tasmania will receive a boost from interstate demand as crops in other states have already been harvested.

"Last year, there was a lot of fruit around in January. Victoria was late and South Australia was very late so there was a lot of competition in the exports markets.
This year most of the mainland has finished, so the next few weeks looks very promising for the Tasmanian crop."
