Italy: Spreafico and Ortoromi plants burn

First day of 2012 marked by a big fire at Spreafico plant in Dolzago (Lecco - Italy), leader in import and distribution of fruit, and at Azienda Agricola Corradi in Marcon (Venice - Italy), main associate of Ortoromi, leader in fresh-cut lettuce production.

As for Spreafico, everything points to an arson in the packaging area. Heavy damages are recorded, flames developed for reasons yet to be ascertained and attacked the company warehouses with smoke visible from miles away. The whole area has been impounded.

As for the Azienda Agricola Corradi, damages could exceed EUR 4 million in value. The farms is owned by Pelosin family and is associated with Ortoromi. The affected area includes 3,000 square meter of warehouses where agricultural machinery, drive trucks, cold storage, packages, packaging lines and tons of consumable agricultural items were kept.

Lettuce greenhouses are safe as well as the office. Flames developed for reasons yet to be ascertained, warehouses were partially covered by insurance.

"For our activity is a blow from economical and human point of view. Seeing years of work and sacrifices go up in smoke hurts" Elio Pelosin, Ortoromi chairman, comments. "We are people who are used to roll up their sleeves: for luck in greenhouses and fields lettuce continues to grow however and the production lines of fresh-cut washing and packaging are intact. We go ahead, head down".

In addition to Marcon plant, Ortoromi can count on 3 other sites of lettuce processing and packaging, two in Veneto and one in Campania.
