Peru's Citrus Growers Association (ProCitrus) would not implement the seal of quality to the national citrus fruit that will be exported this season.
The CEO of ProCitrus, Sergio del Castillo Valderrama, said that the union didn't see it fit to implement this system to validate the quality of the products for the moment.
"We met and there is no consensus between producers to activate this theme. It's something that we are going to review later, but my impression is that this topic will be on stand by this campaign," he said.
ProCitrus created the quality seal to protect Peru's reputation as an exporter of premium citrus.
The quality seal was applied to the Peruvian citrus that complied with Global GAP certifications, US GAAP, Tesco, BRC, HACCP SQF2000, and ETI certifications and that ensured the quality of their fruit. The companies that qualified for the quality seal could carry a Certified Quality for Export logo from Peru Citrus.
Data
In 2014 Procitrus launched its seal of quality that was active until 2016. To date, the seal has only been applied to Minneola tangelo and to the W.Murcott mandarin variety.
Obtaining the seal was voluntary for producers and exporters, as it had a cost that had to be paid by the companies that adopted it.
