China: Stable market demand for soft seed pomegranates
"The Tunisian soft seed pomegranate has gradually become popular as a high-end fruit since it was introduced into China from Tunisia in 1986. Currently, the main three producing areas in China are Henan, Yunnan and Sichuan province, and the listing periods are respectively from the beginning of October to mid November, from late August to early October and from late July to early October." Mr.Wu Zhi, the general manager of Sichuan Jinshuo fruit industry Co. Ltd reported.
"The listing period varies, depending on where it's grown and the development and fruit quality of these three producing areas are not the same either. The pomegranates benefit from the clear alternation between the dry season and the rainy season, as well as the geographical advantages of large differences in elevation and latitude. Sichuan produces a better tasting fruit, for instance, and its planting area has been expanded more effectively.
"Nationwide, the annual output is relatively stable. Compared with 2015, the average market price rose by at least 10% in 2016, but it is expected to remain flat throughout 2017. Our company is located in Liangshan city of Sichuan province. We have an area of about 2000 acres of cultivation base for pomegranates and our annual output is up to 1000-1500 tons."
"The fruit is sold under the brand of 'burning sun' through online sellers and the Wechat platform to the chain supermarkets all over the country, and the key sales areas are in East and Southern China. At present, we are trying to explore how to effectively carry out ecological planting in the orchard in order to improve the fruit quality. We hope to promote the product brand and, at the same time, to lead the industry to develop healthily."
"As the demand is exceeding the supply, we will be based on the domestic market in the next few years. In recent years, the relevant departments have increased the agricultural investment, and to a certain extent, that has changed the previous concepts of growers. I believe that the effective macro-control from the government will contribute to the healthy development of the market."
