Eroski Sells 786 Tonnes In 'Ugly' Produce Campaign
Spanish retailer Eroski has sold more than 786 tonnes of imperfect fruits and vegetables in its campaign to promote the consumption of 'ugly' produce, the company announced. Ugly produce are items which don't fulfil appearance standards, but that have the same taste and nutritional elements as their 'perfect' cousins. The campaign, rolled out during November in Eroski stores, aimed to raise awareness about food waste and responsible consumption. Oranges, potatoes, mandarins and courgettes were the most popular items sold.

The humble Brussels sprout has become the weapon of choice for Asda as it seeks to win back festive shoppers who have been deserting the supermarket in droves for Aldi and Lidl. The Walmart-owned grocer is slashing the price of Christmas vegetables including sprouts, carrots, parsnips and broccoli to 20p – a 57pc reduction on the cost of last year’s vegetables.

Auchan Retail opens 100th Russian hypermarket
French company Auchan Retail has reached a milestone of 100 hypermarkets in Russia, it announced this week. The new store will have a sales space of 5,970 square-metres, and offers 23,400 food and non-food product ranges as well as a Click&Collect pick-up point on its website. Auchan Retail has invested roughly RUB 200 billion (€3.1 billion) in Russia. It is the country's largest foreign investor, employing 43,000 employees.

Former Tesco director sidesteps accounting scandal charges
In the aftermath of Tesco’s accounting scandal, several high-profile directors and managers faced possible charges, but former group commercial director, Kevin Grace, has now been told the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) will not follow through. Weeks after current Tesco CEO, Dave Lewis, took over the reins of the British supermarket chain in September 2014, an enormous accounting scandal broke. It was revealed that the company had embellished its profit by 250 million pounds (nearly 300 million euro).

Lidl trials Express formula with smaller product range
Discounter Lidl is trialing a new formula in Berlin: Lidl Express. It carries a smaller product range than normal, but is also a pick-up point for online orders. Lidl Express is the company's next step in its multichannel strategy: step by step, it is expanding its online range, like when it announced that it would start selling fresh items online in Berlin from 1 December.

Whole Foods Market, Inc. WFM had the rumor mill working overtime the whole of 2016 and the rumors were mostly centered on the M&A front, with the company being touted as a takeover target. Jiajiayue Group, SPAR International’s first retail partner in China since 2004, has launched an initial public offering (IPO) on the Shanghai Stock Exchange.

SPAR to Take Over Billa Stores in Croatia
Spar Austria continues to expand in Croatia and it has decided to take over from REWE Group 62 Billa stores, together with a logistics centre at Sveta Helena, announced Spar Croatia on Friday, adding that it could not disclose the price, reports Novi List on December 16, 2016.
