Honduras: Banana exports generate $485 million dollars

The Agribusiness Unit coordinator of the Secretaría de Agricultura y Ganadería (SAG), Francisco Herrera, said that 2016 will close with a 6 or 7 percent rise in banana exports.

"Banana exports remain stable in the US market but have declined in Europe, so we must work to improve that situation".

He added that fruit exports "will close at 6 or 7 percent, representing 485 million dollars.".

The banana industry is situated in the northern sector of the country and is the second largest Honduran export after coffee.

He recalled that in 2014, banana exports totalled 456 million dollars, according to official figures from the Banco Central de Honduras (BCH).

According to official data, until 1993 the fruit was Honduras' main export.

According to official data, Honduras currently ranks third in Central America, with an estimated production of 40 million boxes, compared to the 100 million produced in Guatemala, and the 90 million Costa Rica produces, said Herrera.
