Vegetable snack focuses on health-conscious consumer

“We launched our vegetable snack, York’s Harvest Garden Chips, at United Fresh back in June,” says Chad Hartman with Truly Good Foods. “That was the first time anyone out of our building saw it,” he added. It’s a dried vegetable product that comes in three different varieties: dried green beans, dried okra and dried mixed vegetables. The mixed vegetable package contains carrots, green beans, taro roots, sweet potatoes and squash.

Dried product
The vegetables are imported as dried product from Taiwan. “During the past three to four years, we sold these dried vegetable products in bulk and already sourced them from Taiwan. “We like Taiwan’s product best because of its quality,” shared Hartman. Truly Good Foods works with US-based brokers who import the product directly.

Interest for the York’s Harvest Garden Chips line has been very good. The product is available in a few smaller, independent grocery stores in the country, including IGA in South Carolina and some rural stores. “We also operate in non-traditional markets such as hospitals and cafeterias,” shared Hartman. “It is a very healthy product and my instinct tells me that by January 1, people start eating healthy. We are hoping to get firm commitments from retailers come January 1st.”

Versatile package
Depending on the vegetable variety, York’s Harvest Garden Chips are available in 2 to 3.5 ox. Trays. The product comes in a clear package that allows consumers to see what they are eating, said Hartman. The package is very versatile, providing the retailer with different options for display: hang up, lay down or stand up on the end.
