US company imports Thai coconuts you can drink from directly

A Florida company has launched a new program importing organic coconuts to drink directly from.

Ecoripe Tropicals, based in Miami, Fl. has begun a new initiative with Organic Genuine Coconuts to import Thai coconuts which have a year-round season. “We just started receiving a good supply of the Organic Genuine Coconuts, which are the aromatic Nam Hom variety grown in Thailand,” says Marc Holbik of Ecoripe. En route to the U.S. the coconuts pit stop in Spain where they are prepared and packaged—a process that adds a laser-cut circle, a ring pull made from the coconut husk and a recyclable straw. (The company is working on a compostable straw.)

The natural approach
Holbik says via this product, consumers can get 10 oz. or more of the aromatic GlobalGap and raw coconut water in its natural container, out of which the meat can also be scooped. He also adds that the Nam Hom coconut is the same variety as the diamond-cut Thai coconut although the Nam Hom one allows easier access to the water and meat. “The diamond cut coconuts you have to use a big knife and swing pretty hard to open,” he says.

Ecoripe is distributing the product largely on the East Coast via an array of retailers including everything from national chains to smaller, ethnic retailers.

“We’re working with retailers to promote the item and that includes demonstrations and introductory pricing,” says Holbik. “In the summer, coconuts sell the best so we’re hoping to have the programs set up this spring so everyone is ready for the summer demand.”
