Potatoes USA has released its first comprehensive set of regional retail sales reports, analyzing fresh potato performance across eight distinct markets in the United States. The reports are designed to provide category managers and production teams with region-specific insights to refine assortment, promotion, and merchandising strategies.
According to Potatoes USA, the initiative is part of a broader national effort to strengthen collaboration with retailers and offer tools that support store-level decision-making and category development.
"This initiative is about helping retailers uncover opportunities in their own region," said Nick Bartelme, Potatoes USA Global Retail Development Manager. "Potato performance varies widely across the country. By breaking the data down regionally, we're giving retailers a sharper lens on consumer demand in their markets, insights that inform how they merchandise, promote, and prioritize potato products in store. Whether it's capitalizing on rising trends like medleys or tailoring product assortments to meet local preferences, these reports support more precise, growth-oriented strategies."
The reports show that in California, there was a strong preference for 5-pound bags and increased sales of yellow potatoes, with medley potatoes also showing volume growth. In the Great Lakes region, retailers recorded year-over-year growth in both dollar and volume sales, with yellow potatoes and smaller pack sizes performing well. In the Mid-South, overall volume remained steady, although medleys and petite potatoes outperformed national averages.
Data from the Northeast showed strong consumer interest in red and yellow potatoes, with bulk and value pack formats remaining popular. The Southeast region posted gains in dollar sales despite a slight decline in volume, which suggests potential for premiumization and targeted in-store marketing.
The South Central region recorded one of the highest year-over-year increases in both dollar sales and volume, driven particularly by russets and value packs. In the Plains region, shoppers showed a preference for smaller pack sizes, while red and yellow potato categories performed well in both volume and dollar sales. In the West, the category led in total dollar sales, with russets, yellows, and medleys contributing strongly to a diverse demand profile.
