Growers Garden, a Fife-based snack brand established in 2019, has expanded its distribution to over 50 Tesco stores across Scotland with its cauliflower crisps lineup. These crisps are crafted from surplus and irregular vegetables sourced from farming partners in the east of Scotland. The company offers three flavors: Black Pepper & Lime, Mango Chilli, and Smoky Chorizo.
The cooperative, initiated by 16 farming families, has a longstanding history of vegetable cultivation in the region. Eventually, it expanded to incorporate growers from Perthshire and the Borders. This initiative aims to curb food waste by repurposing surplus produce into value-added snacks for wider distribution.
Tesco has acknowledged the product as an instance of Scottish innovation, aligning with their strategy to support local suppliers. Barry O'Donnell, Tesco's buying manager for Scotland, noted the collaborative effort with local farmers to create a nutritious snack. "Growers Garden is a brilliant example of Scottish innovation. By working hand-in-hand with local farmers, they've created a tasty and nutritious snack," he stated.
Marion MacCormick, chairperson of Growers Garden, emphasized the cooperative's mission to reduce waste by converting leftover or misshapen vegetables into consumable products. "Our cooperative of Fife farmers came together with a shared aim to reduce waste by turning leftover or misshapen vegetables into something delicious and healthy," MacCormick explained, highlighting their collaboration with Tesco for UK-wide supply.
