Handelmaatschappij Jan Oskam successfully concludes red Alessia pear season

Lovely, plump pear with unique aroma gaining popularity mostly in German-speaking market

Dutch top fruit exporter Oskam recently concluded its first Alessia pear season with a pack out of over 90% Class I. That was shortly before the start of the 2024 overseas pear season. "Less than two percent rot and just under five percent good, sellable class II. Those are report figures you can be proud of. Our cultivation team deserves massive praise; they managed to harvest an average net production of almost 6 kg of pears after a single growing year of this red pear variety, even though experience with it is still quite limited," says Kees Oskam.

Alessia is a Doyenne du Comice crossbred with fertile, productive Red Williams. "That results in a lovely, pot-bellied pear with a special aroma that's gaining popularity in especially the German-speaking markets. Growing on double, forked, intermediate stems proved successful, and the pears retained their color during the growing season. Also, harvesting is done well after the last Conference. That's a substantial additional advantage for future growers," Kees concludes.
