The pepper campaign is running 2 weeks late in Almeria

"The switch from Dutch to Spanish peppers could cause some supply issues"

Almeria's bell pepper season is starting with very small quantities, mainly in the municipalities of Berja and Dalías, although there won't be a significant production available until mid-October.

"In El Ejido, we have not yet started with the pepper harvest, as it has been delayed by about 2 weeks due to the impact of this summer's high temperatures during the fruit setting. At some points, they actually exceeded 50 degrees Celsius inside the greenhouses," says José Antonio Baños, president of the Ejidomar cooperative.

Given the limited supply in Almeria and the lower-than-usual production in the Netherlands, bell pepper prices are still very high. In the case of long red bell peppers of the Lamuyo variety, prices have reached 4 Euro per kilo in the auctions of Almeria during week 35, while short bell peppers remain at fairly high levels, oscillating above 2.00 € per kilo.

"The switch from the Dutch to the Spanish production could cause some supply issues for a few weeks," said José Antonio Baños. "The Netherlands seems to be finishing earlier, and Almeria's campaign has been delayed, while Murcia already finished some time ago. Almeria won't have significant volumes until mid-October, at least," he said.
