The new Cévennes Sweet Onion campaign is underway. After a tough year in 2022, producers are pleased to announce that the 2023 season is shaping up very well!

2023: good volumes and quality
While last year's volumes were well below average, the 2023 campaign looks promising, both in terms of quality and volumes. "The growers are delighted with their harvest, and the products are beautiful and healthy," explains Carl Grandidier, sales manager for SCA Origines Cévennes. All of this thanks to a "very favorable" weather forecast. This season, the cooperative is expecting a harvest ranging from 2,200 to 2,300 tons, very close to the production potential of 2,400 to 2,500 tons. "Water restrictions in April prevented growers from replanting all the plots, otherwise we could even have beaten our record!"

A relief for the Cooperative, which had only been able to market 1,500 tons in 2022. "Nearly 1,000 tons had been destroyed by the leafhopper. This year, however, growers did everything they could to stop its progress by installing traps".

A top-of-the-range product benefiting from the PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) since 2008, the Oignon Doux des Cévennes could suffer from inflation. "That would be the only slight downside to this campaign," explains Carl Grandidier. With consumers becoming more careful with their wallets, the price of Oignon Doux des Cévennes could be an obstacle. "We don't yet know whether the end consumer will be on board this year".
