Dutch tomato prices fare better in May

In Europe, tomato prices dipped in May, but not by much, according to multi-year statistics. A European Commission-maintained tomato dashboard update confirms that. However, the price drop in the Netherlands was noticeably less severe than average.

In May, a kilogram of tomatoes cost an average of €1.59 across the board—a record price; reported in the Netherlands, Spain, and Italy. Of the four countries included in the dashboard, only France's May average €2.29/kg price was not a record.

In the Netherlands, a kilo of tomatoes fetched, on average, €1.47. That is twice as much as 'normal.' This year's productions were, however, disappointing, thanks to the energy crisis and dark spring.

Those prices were higher than Spain's €1.14. That price was a record, too, though only 1.5 times higher. Italy and France's price extremes are even lower.

Fewer exports
The EC also shares EU import and export figures on the dashboard. Here, the increased imports from Morocco and the even sharper rise in Turkish tomato imports stand out. EU exports, on the other hand, lag somewhat behind the average of recent years.
