Cherries - new varieties less sensitive to cracking

Focusing on varietal renewal to limit the risk of cracking - according to Enrico Zanzi, several strategies can be implemented against cracking, including less sensitive varieties.

The experimental and comparison orchard at Zanzi

"2023 highlighted the problem in various areas, caused by the heavy rain. In some parts, cracking significantly damaged all early varieties. This should lead to the whole segment making some considerations," explains Enrico from Vivai F.lli Zanzi.

Installing anti-rain nets should be a given. "You cannot risk it, considering the investments made. Anti-hail nets are very useful against cracking, but they are not always the ultimate solution, as other solutions are needed. The intense rain of the past few weeks, for example, have caused considerable damage also underneath the nets, this is why it is important to choose varieties that are not too sensitive."

Vivai F.lli Zanzi verified how newer varieties are less sensitive to cracking compared to older ones. Zanzi has a field where, every year, it compares new with traditional varieties.

"More specifically, we have found out that the damage ranges between 15 and 20% in dated varieties such as Kordia, Regina and Ferrovia, while the damage is considerably lower at 5-6% for new varieties such as Rocket, Frisco, Folfer, Ferduce, Fertard, Royal Helen, Royal Lafayette and Royal Edie. This means the genetic improvement obtained by some producers or breeders such as COT International, CEP Innovation and IPS, combined with anti-rain covers, can solve the problems caused by abnormal weather events."

"Mulching also helps, as water stagnation increases the possibility of cracking. As for growing forms, fusetto and the columnar axis are becoming increasingly popular. The purpose is to obtain 4.6 kg of cherries per tree with grades starting at 28 mm, which is the minimum grade that is well paid by the markets. Another fundamental aspect is flavor, with intense Brix levels, well-balanced acids/sugars and a good aroma of cherry."

Enrico Zanzi confirms that a lot of cherry trees are being planted abroad as well, with nations such as Uzbekistan that are growing a lot.
