Quebec Haskap berry growers contend with dry conditions

Haskap berry harvest will begin in Quebec next week and growers are thankful for the rain received this week. “We are missing a lot of rain. Today is the first day we’re having a good amount of rain since April. It’s been a pretty dry season so we are irrigating each week,” says Marc-Antoine Pelletier of Ferme Les Délices du Rapide S.E.N.C. “The crop will be good but on average or maybe even a bit below due to the lack of rain during the springtime.”

Harvest should begin around June 20-21 and will go on for four weeks. (Other growers try to finish their harvest in three weeks but Ferme Les Délices du Rapide S.E.N.C. takes a fourth week given it has more varieties to harvest.) “Though the growing is not equal this year--there is still some green fruit that we are seeing so while we will probably begin a bit earlier than usual though we’re not sure at this point,” says Pelletier.

Production across Canada
Along with Quebec, other provinces in Canada that produce Haskap berries are Nova Scotia and New Brunswick in Eastern Canada, Ontario and Alberta and British Columbia in Western Canada.

Meanwhile, Pelletier says demand for Haskap does grow every year. This year, Haskap Quebec will also focus its efforts on marketing this more delicate Canadian berry in the fresh season.

As for pricing, Pelletier says it will aim to have the same pricing as last year, even with increased costs.
