Juan Antonio García Romero, manager of Viveros Grajera:

"The protected blueberry variety Jusant I is arousing great interest due to its early harvest dates"

The nursery Viveros Grajera has been authorized for the multiplication and sale of the Jusant I variety of blueberries.

This is a protected variety, owned by Jusant Innovación SL, an R&D company belonging to the Jucamp group, a firm devoted to the production and marketing of citrus fruits, berries and pitahaya. The Jusant I variety is its first project as a breeder.

"The Jusant is being very well received by producers and marketing companies in Huelva, both for its agronomic and organoleptic characteristics, as well as for the commercial windows it gives access to after it is harvested," says Juan Antonio García Romero, manager of Viveros Grajera.

"Agronomically, the variety grows in a bush with predominantly vertical growth and medium-high height. It also doesn't require any hours of cold. One of its main characteristics is its long shelf life. It produces a slightly sour fruit, very pleasant to the palate."

"Almost all berries are larger than 18 mm and it has a very characteristic bloom, with a high and very visible star," says Juan Antonio. "It has a thick skin, and no excess of seeds inside its pulp."

Depending on its technical management, the Jusant I can produce in two totally different production windows:

"We can have a natural harvest on twigs from the previous year between the end of May and the beginning of July. Likewise, we can also have production on a primocane from September to November, which is the factor that is arousing most interest in this variety, since that's when the production in central and northern Europe, as well as in northern Spain, comes to an end and there is hardly any supply from other countries," says Juan Antonio.

With this variety, it is recommended to plant around 5,000 and 6,000 plants per hectare, which will yield an average of 25,000 kg per hectare once the plants reach adult stage.
