“The Polish apple season should still be going by the start of June at the very least”

After two strong months, March has been on and off when it comes to the apple trade in Poland. Mateusz Wajnert, head of sales for Polish apple exporter Galster, states that demand is looking similar to previous years: “After both a very good January and February, March seems kind of unreal. We have weeks that require overtime for our workers, interweaved with weeks where we see much less work. There are several reasons for it, but it’s mostly to do with the availability of apples, which we’ll have to deal with until the end of the season. In my view, demand looks similar to previous seasons. We have a slightly bigger rotation than we had last year at this time of the season.”

With the end of the season coming closer, Galster will focus on keeping volumes and quality to the level that their clients require, Wajnert explains. “For Galster, our goals for the last few months of the season are to keep volumes and quality for our old customers up to par. Of course, we’re also in talks with new customers, as we try to find the right agreement to start cooperating together. The season should still be going by the start of June at the very least.”

Looking back at the overall season, Wajnert is neither happy nor unhappy about the results. He does hope the company will be able to reach new markets in the next season: “I’ve been asked by a lot of people how the season has been going. To each of them I’ve answered that this season is nothing to brag about, but nothing to complain about either. It’s another season where more than 90 per cent of the trade is done with customers we have been working with in previous seasons, and it has made our success. However, we are trying to grow in the next seasons, so we need to always be vigilant with new markets. Also to make more trade deals, we need to have more volumes of apples from growers, so we’ll need to be able to set this up as well.”
