"Demand for strawberries from Basilicata is high, but, at the moment, the most appreciated variety on the domestic market remains Sabrosa-Candonga, the cultivar selected by the Planasa nursery that has found its ideal habitat in the Metaponto area. We harvested the first Candonga strawberries already in early January, which are much appreciated by buyers and consumers thanks to their red color, flavor, and grades," reports Luca Zuccarella, sales manager at OP Zuccarella in Scanzano Jonico, among the 23 companies in Basilicata authorized to use the Candonga Fragola Top Quality® mark.

"We are swamped with requests for Top Quality Candonga strawberries, as demand is 50% higher than that for the other main cultivars and sales prices are around €1 higher. What makes the difference are not only the volumes ordered but also the weekly purchasing frequency. The recognition of the brand was made possible thanks to the marketing strategies implemented by the Spanish group aimed mainly at consumers. Quantities available are anyway limited at the moment, as the 2023 season is just starting."
The sunny days and mild climate of the past ten days favored plant development and accelerated ripening and harvesting. "This season, we decided to plant 8 hectares also due to the many requests from supermarkets, with which we have stipulated programs until late May."
