Prices up in seven of the eight state capitals surveyed

Brazilian fruit production hampered by rains

In seven of the eight capitals surveyed by the GetĂșlio Vargas Foundation, fruit prices went up in January. Papaya, oranges and apples were some fruit that saw expressive rises. The weather is the factor that most contributed to this high in fruit prices. It rained too much in the main producing regions, which reduced supply. Watermelon alone, for example, rose by almost 50% in some capitals in January compared to December.

The banana was the one exception. The prices for one kilo fell 20.2% in Curitiba. According to the state-owned company, there was an increase in the supply of midget bananas in the country, with quality products. The survey was carried out by the National Supply Company (CONAB).
