The Belgian cooperative, BelOrta, launched 'Earth' in early 2021. Fruits and vegetables in transition to organic are grouped and marketed under this concept. BelOrta is now expanding this range with the Qtee pear. This is a relatively new pear variety with a beautiful red blush and fresh flavor.
The Qtee pear, first planted in 2015, has only been on the market for a few years. It is a nice addition to the assortment. Due to its early harvest time, this pear will open the new Belgian pear season. Also, its shape, color, texture, and flavor are distinctive. That adds excellent diversity for growers, traders, and consumers alike.
“These pears could be a breath of fresh air on the organic market's top fruit segment," says Sander De Proost. He's responsible for organics at BelOrta. "We're anticipating the first organic Qtee pears."
"So, we're already offering them under our Earth concept. People can, thus, already get a taste of this future organic pear. In 2023, the conversion period will be over. And Qtee pears can then be sold as organic," he concludes.
